USB Fax-Modem adapter: unexpected need

Wow! You would think that with e-mail, texting, and other modern communications options, we would not have any need to use fax machines, anymore. You would be so wrong, in that assumption.

Just recently, I had to send a document to a government agency. But, as it turns out, they did not have an e-mail address to send the document to. They did provide a physical address where I could send in the paperwork. That would have meant that I would have to go to the post office, and mail the items. Of course, I tend to be extra cautious, and tend to pay extra in order to track my mail. I did not feel like going through all of that process. Then, I noticed that there was an option to fax all of my documents. Did I have a fax machine? Well, not exactly. But, I did have a USB fax-modem adapter.

In the old days, whenever anybody needed to transmit documents to another party, the predominant way was through the use of a fax machine. We know it as the device where you load the documents, dial the number, and you hear the funny, garbled sound as the paper goes through. All of this is being transmitted over the phone lines. Of course, not everyone has a need for a dedicated faxing machine. An interesting option is to get a compact, USB fax-modem device.

So, what is a USB fax-modem adapter? It is a simple, portable device that acts as a medium between your computer, and telephone lines. You may use any program to fax your documents. You may use productivity software, such as a word processing document, or any graphics program. As long as you have the “print” option available, you could output it to fax mode , and it will work.

On my behalf, I am happy to report that I was able to use my device without any issue. I plugged it in to the USB port of the computer, while the other end was connected to the phone line (RJ11). As the transmission was going through, the program would be updating me on the current number of the page being sent. Afterwards, it would notify me that the transmission was a success.

A USB adapter for faxing is a nice tool to have for those moments when e-mail is not an option, and you need to send your documents, quickly. They are very affordable, and you just may find yourself needing one, when you least expect it.
