During the Coronavirus / COVID-19 pandemic, many employees were affected by the closing of their workplace. Some were laid off, and some were given the opportunity to work from home. However, one thing is the likeliest outcome for all sides: the greater usage of home computers.
When companies were forced to send employees home due to the pandemic, a whole new workforce was given birth: teleworkers. With that, employees were given the opportunity to work from anywhere, using tools that could facilitate their jobs, much easier. Tools such as the home computer, webcams, the Internet, video-conferencing software, and cell phones became a natural extension of workers. Now, employees have no need to go anywhere to do their jobs, but stare at their home screen, all day long.
Lest we forget, many workers were laid off. There are some professions for which telecommuting is not possible, since they require a person to perform a physical task. Some of these professions that were affected include: restaurant, transportation, construction, physical security, and janitorial. As such, many laid-off people are using their home computers more often than before for the following purposes: job-search, and / or entertainment (think Netflix).
It is important to recognize that technology brings many advantages to the workforce, such as being able to use computers to perform tasks. At the same time, we must recognize that we are living in very stressful moments, and should detach ourselves from our computers screens, take a breather, and do things that can take the stress away.
